How to Blur the Sides of a Portrait Vertical Video Using Capcut

So you shot a vertical video using your phone.
It looks great in vertical mode… but…

What if you want to publish it in landscape mode especially for YouTube?
How do you remove the black sides?

Instead of removing the black, it’s more common to replace the black areas with a blurred version of the video.

Here’s how to do it using Capcut, the mobile video editing app.

Download the complete Capcut Mobile Video Editing Guide here… https://www.videolane.com/capcut/

If you haven’t done so, install Capcut.
Capcut is available for both iPhones and Android phones.

  1. Open Capcut.
  2. Tap on New Project.
  3. Select the vertical video and tap on Add.

You will see your video in the vertical orientation.

  1. From the toolbar below look for Format.
  2. Tap on Format and select 16×9, the landscape orientation.

Now your video is in Landscape.

  1. Next, press the back button in the toolbar and look for Canvas.
  2. Tap on Canvas.
  3. Tap on Blur.

Now you will see a variation of Blur.

  1. Choose the one with the most blur.

The black areas are now replaced with a blurred version of the vertical video.

Before we continue you may want to scroll the timeline to the back to remove the watermark.
Or you can leave the logo intact to support the good people at Bytedance for giving us Capcut and TikTok.

  1. Next we are going to the top right-hand corner to export the final video.
  2. I can change the resolution if I want to but I prefer to export in 1080p 30 frames per second.
  3. Finally press the up arrow icon.

Now go to your gallery or camera roll to look for the landscape version of your vertical video.
